Former Marquette center Theo John transfers to Duke

Former Marquette center Theo John has transferred to Duke, providing a boost to Duke’s front court. Duke was in need of a backup center added to the roster, and is getting exactly that in Theo John. Not only does John fill a team need, he fits this roster like a glove.

Having spent time playing under Steve Wojciechowski and Chris Carrawell at Marquette, John already had somewhat of a connection with Duke Basketball. When John entered the transfer portal, Duke immediately reached out. Just one day later, John has committed to Duke.

The 6’9, 245 pound Senior started for three seasons at Marquette. Last season was his best at Marquette, where he averaged 8.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. Prior to John’s arrival at Duke, Joey Baker was the lone Senior on the roster. For a Duke team that will be extremely young, the experience John brings to the team is invaluable.

Theo John is tough defender who plays with an edge. He is constantly aggressive on the defensive end and has a motor that never stops. He does not have a vast offensive game, but he is capable of finishing around the rim.

John is an excellent rim protector. He led the Big East in blocked shots per game during the 2018-2019 season with 2.1 per game and averages 1.8 blocks per game over the last three seasons. John has battled injuries over the last two seasons but if he can stay healthy, he provides an intimidating rim protecting presence off the bench for Duke.

Theo John immediately improves Duke’s second unit. He will also do wonders for Mark Williams. John has a great deal of experience at the college level and will be able to challenge Williams every day in practice and pass down tips and tricks to the young big man. Williams was the only true rim protector on the team prior to John’s transfer to Duke, but now when Williams sits, Duke has the option to insert John and still have a rim protector on the floor.

Theo John has a chance to be a very good pickup for Duke. He provides quality depth and the experience he brings with him will only help the young Blue Devils.
